There have been stories of grandparents blowing
tobacco smoke into the ears of children to relieve them of their ear
aches
Contrary to popular belief that ear candles suck
ear wax from the ear by creating a vacuum, one theory is that the
wonderful benefits achieved from ear coning are accredited to the
smoke. It appears that ear candles work by producing a chimney
effect. After lighting the large end of the candle, smoke then flows
through the candle and pours out the tip. When placed to the ear,
this smoke spirals into the ear, absorbing excess moisture and
debris and carrying it back out. As the smoke hits the flame on its
way back out, it is re-melted, leaving a stream of residue inside
the unburned portion of the ear candle. Skeptics claim that this
residue is simply melted wax from the ear candle itself, which is a
valid point since ear candles are made of wax and fabric. However,
that point becomes moot when the candle is burned down and there is
absolutely no residue left in the candle. This is the case when ear
candles are made using the correct wax to fabric ratio, like Kansas
Candles’
organic ear candles.
Often times there will be no residue left inside
the ear candle after a session, though this does not mean that the
session was ineffective. Read the testimonials below!
The rhythm of the smoke against the tympanic
membrane (ear drum) seems to stimulate fluid drainage via the
Eustachian tube, which drains from the middle ear to the back of the
throat. Some people actually say that they can taste the beeswax
after ear coning!
As far as ear wax removal is concerned, we do not
think that all of the residue in the candle is ear wax. Ears are
self-cleaning and ideally you should never have to clean them. Your
ear wax is produced on the outer portion of the ear canal and is
there to repel water and trap debris from getting too far into your
ear canal. Your ears have a continual cycle of producing small
amounts of wax, which catches debris, dries up, and works its way
out the ear canal where it eventually just falls out. If you get rid
of that ear wax, then your ears will be dry and itchy and infection
is even a possibility. So please don’t stick things in your ears to
clean them! The same applies for ear candles that are not properly
designed. Did you know that a child’s ear canal is much shorter than
an adult’s? Beware of ear candles that are made smaller for
children! Much of the bad reputation given to ear candles comes from
poorly made ear candles that scratch the ear canal or even hit the
ear drum. This is why
Kansas
Candles’ organic ear candles have been designed to sit on the
outer portion of the ear canal.
Their theory regarding the relationship between
ear candles and ear wax is that sometimes the balance in our ears is
disrupted for various reasons. When this happens, most of the time
the body simply needs a little boost in order to regulate itself.
They feel that ear candles often stimulate the ear to do what it is
naturally designed to do. Our ears are very complex and it doesn’t
take much to disrupt their natural state of balance. We experience
these disturbances all the time, like when our ears pop at high
altitudes or ring after hearing a loud noise. We can even become
dizzy and lose our balance when our natural equilibrium is upset.
When given what it needs, our body will take care of itself. Ear
coning is a simple, non-invasive way to help the body regain
balance. If we can hear sounds when invisible sound waves hit our
ear drum, then just think what waves of “therapeutic” smoke can do!
