Energy Balance
During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is
the time when you may feel low in energy and that the
baby is taking it all up, without giving a thought to how
that little bundle of cells is clinging to you for all his
life support. The mother in turn, may just be busy in her
normal routine - she gets up from bed with a jerk, calls,
throws up, goes to office, drinks tea, throws up,
picks up children, has lunch, throws up, cleans the
house, has another tea, throws up and so on…….what
a day for the poor baby!!
Its time to
realize that looking after yourself when pregnant is very
important. Do not try to prove yourself, or be a super - mom.
Now is the time when you and your baby are a team; you
share energies. The baby's nervous system physiology is
derived from the mother - implying that if a mother is too
hyper or nervous type, then, the child will also be very likely
be of that type.
A healthy pattern
of energies is required, so as not to imbalance the child
before, during or after birth. One can obtain the balance,
manipulate energies and effect a gradual change in their constitutional
and habitual energy patterns.
| What are these energies? |
We commonly
describe our energies as love energy, hate energy, happy energy,
crazy energy and what not. We usually blame (as has become
the fashion) our hormones for every undesirable mood and physical
discomfort. Hormonal changes do take place in us but all for
a reason. Energy system according to Yoga is governed by the
7 energy centers (chakras) within our body. These chakras
are the vortex of energy, each having its corresponding energy
system.
The 7 chakras
are placed along the spinal cord - Mooldhara (located
at perineum); Swadhisthana (just above anus); Manipura
(Navel center); Anahata (heart center); Vishuddhi
(throat); Ajna (space behind forehead) and Sahasrana
(position of fontanels).
If any of the
above chakras are afflicted (either too low in energy or high)
they create an imbalance. This imbalance can manifest itself
mentally, physically or emotionally. It would be in the
form of ailment, fear, greed, restlessness, introversion/extroversion,
etc.; everything depending on which chakra is afflicted.
Remember, the
imbalance of the mother's chakra energy during pregnancy has
a corresponding effect on the child - both on a day-to-day
basis, as well as imprinting a constitutional legacy for the
rest of his life.
All this energy
can be managed by various yoga techniques - breathing
techniques (Pranayama), exercises (Asanas) and relaxation
(Yoga Nidra) - or a combination of these.

| Understanding your energies |
Mooldhara
Chakra
| |
Imbalance
of this chakra can lead to premature or quick labour,
inability to open cervix resulting in long labor or
emergency caesarean.
If
this chakra is low in energy: It's effects may be
low motivation, depression, constipation, primal fears,
phobias, excessive sleep, suicidal thoughts.
| |
Remedy
- Asanas to using the leg and pelvic area; Bandhas and
Yoga Nidra for depression.
| |
If
this chakra has too much energy: It's effects are
in the form of Constant activity, restlessness, insomnia,
sudden anger.
| |
Remedy
- Relaxations, yoga nidra, pacifying asanas and pranayama.
Swadhisthana
| |
As this
chakra comes under pressure during pregnancy (from the
baby) it can lead to the arousal of subconscious material
in the form of dreams, you may have dreams which you
have never had before. If the meaning is intuitively
clear, well and good and if not then let it be.
Low
energy - weak urinary and reproductive function,
low libido, miscarriage or poor development of foetus.
| |
High
energy - excessive attachment to pleasure of
life such as possessions, sex, food.
| |
Remedy
- Yoga nidra |
| |
Manipura
| |
This
chakra governs the digestive system, physical strength,
self-confidence, etc. Imbalance at this chakra can lead
to pregnancy ailments like nausea, diabetes and raised
body temperature.
| |
Since
this chakra represents the 'fire element', it affects
the baby like the proverbial burn in the oven, slowly
"cooking" him until he is done just right. Not too much
heat, nor too little is good. Hence it is very important
to maintain a balance here.
Low
energy - lead to introverted, low self-esteemed
child.
| |
High
energy - over heated, restless, ever-achieving
child who will always fight rather than flight.
| |
Remedy
- Surya Bheda Pranayam
(if low) and Shashankasana (if high). |
Anahata
| |
This
relates to the circulatory and respiratory system, relationships,
love, sense of touch and skin. You may find writing
poetry, art, handicrafts and sensual touch come more
naturally at this time.
| |
Some
typical feelings of a first time mother: "How will I
relate to my baby?" and also "Can I have unconditional
love?"
On the
other hand a mother with children may feel - "How will
I spread and share my love?"
| |
Remedy
- meditation on anahata
chakra. |
| |
Imbalance
may lead to - rashes, patchiness of skin color,
dryness or oiliness, high blood pressure, varicose veins,
breathing and respiratory illness and asthma.
| |
Remedy
- Relaxation, Pranayama, Mantra (H.B.P); Asanas (varicose
veins); Hasta Uttarasan and Trikonasan.
Vishuddhi
| |
This
relates to rational thought, speech, voice, communication,
thyroid function, immune system and purification.
| |
This
chakra assists the mother in maintaining purity around
the child - from any ill effects of the external world.
This affects the baby by giving the mother the ability
to intellectually and rationally understand things.
Low
energy - slow metabolic rates, irrational responses,
chronic throat illnesses and neck problems.
| |
High
energy - high metabolic rate, speedy personality,
excessive analysis of every issue, hoarseness of throat.
| |
Remedy
- Not to feel verbally
repressed on tongue-tied; speak your mind when necessary;
listen to nice music; chanting and maintaining balance.
Ajna
| |
Relates
to the pineal gland, pituitary gland, higher mind and
sixth sense. A pregnant woman receives a natural boost
in her intuitive areas and feels more sensitive to the
"vibes" around her.
| |
Enables
a woman to use her intuitive mind during labor when
intellect does not accompany.
To
help balance this chakra - Anuloma Viloma Pranayama,
Om chanting, Trataka, Jala Neti.
Sahasrana
| |
It is
the realm beyond humanness. Knowledge comes that we
are just a channel to bring the baby into this world.
We are jut the first guru/teacher/guide for that child
as decided by destiny.
