By : Lena Fieldson

Whether you use Yoga or other techniques to solve weight problems, the BMI is an essential guideline to witness your own success in terms of losing weight.

These days, the media bombards us with a lot of information especially about losing weight and weight loss products. What we find is that many of them do not do a good job of promoting weight loss and many of the others do not encourage permanent outcomes.

For people who are interested in losing weight in order to become healthy, it is best that they asses their situation and include using their body mass index to help with the process. This recommendation would allow individuals to keep track of their weight and therefore give them the opportunity to get a clear understanding of what they need to do to get their bodies in the shape they want it to be. If you are already overweight or obese, you are more at risk of being sick.

BMI or body mass index is a measurement that compares a person's weight in kilograms and height in meters. BMI=weight (kg)/ {height (m)}2. The normal range of the BMI is around 20-25. A person is considered to be overweight if he or she has 26-30 BMI. Above 30-40 BMI score is labeled as obese and if someone's BMI is over 40, he or she is considered to be morbidly obese. If the BMI calculator gives scores lower than 20 this indicates malnutrition.

The body mass index is very popular in fitness and diet programs. It is very important that we have a basic knowledge about it and calculating the BMI scores as well. The good news is that BMI calculators and counters are available online, from stores selling dietary supplements or even those stores who sell exercise machines. BMI calculators these days are already portable and so handy that you can just use them easily. You can also find your calculations online. These websites offers easy to use self help programs so long as you have access to the computer.

In using an online BMI calculator program, you only have to enter you weight and height and you can just directly get your results with just a click away. This will help you monitor your BMI regularly and will also help you avoid being malnourished and help you avoid the risks of cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, etc.

BMI calculators are very dependable for those between ages 18-70. For pregnant and lactating women, bodybuilders, athletes or people with chronic illnesses, the BMI calculator is not advisable since it may give misleading results because of the conditions these groups of people have. If you do not have computer access or a BMI calculator, you can calculate your BMI at specific fitness centers or health clubs.

Understanding your BMI can greatly assist you in your quest for weight loss and fitness.
