Yoga Management of Acidity - II

The Yogic Management of Acidity involves developing:

1. A routine
2. The right eating habit
3. Dietary and Lifestyle changes

Developing a Routine:

  • When you rise, take a glass of lukewarm water to encourage regular morning bowel movement. Urinate and have bowel movement (without forcing).
  • Practice the yoga cleansing technique of Kunjal (Stomach wash). In this yogic practice, you first sit in Kagasana (Crow Pose), then drink 4-6 glasses of lukewarm water quickly without pausing. Thereafter, bend forwards from the waist and regurgitate the water by pressing three fingers of the right hand on the tongue gently at the far end where it meets the gullet. This technique should be learnt under guidance and is contraindicated in some cases.
    Practice daily for 20 - 30 days, then 3 days a week
  • Agnisar Kriya - Practice 3 to 4 rounds. In this you should first sit in Sukhasana (or the easy squat pose). Then exhale completely while pulling the abdomen in. While holding the breath in this position flap your abdomen in and out 20 times. This makes one round.
  • Bhraman Pranayama - for 5 to 10 minutes (breath exercise while walking) Breathe in 3 steps and breathe out for 6 steps.
  • Bhraman Pranayama after lunch
  • Bhraman Pranayama for 5 minutes.
  • Agnisar Kriya for 3-5 rounds.
  • Practice of the following yoga positions (Asanas) each 4 times, 15 seconds each time:
    - Janusheershasana
    - Paschimottanasana
    - Bhujangasana
    - Pawanmuktasana
    - Ardhamatsyasana
    - Sarvangasana.
  • Sheetali Pranayama - Sitting in Sukhasana (easy squat pose) draw the tongue out of the mouth and curl it so that it forms a 'barrel like' pipe through which breath is drawn in. Hold the breath for 5 seconds and then exhale through nose. This helps to balance the heat and lessen the secretion of the Hydrochloric acid by the stomach.
