Advanced Yoga Study

the body depends not only upon its structural organization but also upon the nature of the material in it. So if we want to bring down in to the lower bodies the subtle vibrations of the higher bodies then we must provide the lower bodies with the right type of material. All the lower bodies are constantly changing and purification consists in gradually replacing the relatively coarse material by a more refined material. The physical body is purified relatively easily by right kind of food and drink known as sattwic diet, regular exercise, correct breathing and proper relaxation and sleep.

The purification of the higher bodies, the instruments of thought and emotion are brought about by gradually excluding all undesirable thoughts and emotions from the mind and replacing them with higher and nobler ones. As the vibrational tendencies change, the matter of the bodies also changes. Another method is to constantly chant mantras and prayers. These make the bodies vibrate at very high rates of frequency and this brings about an influx of spiritual forces from the planes above and the process thus set in motion day by day gradually washes out all understandable elements from the bodies. It is a positive practice. It does not take place by itself one has to go on practicing day after day for long periods of times.

Santosh (contentment)
‘Santoshad anuttama sukha labha'. The second element is contentment. It is necessary to cultivate this quality to a very high degree. The ordinary man is subjected all kinds of impacts and he reacts to these impacts according to his habits, prejudices, training or mood of the moment or according to his nature. These reactions involve in most cases greater or lesser disturbances in the mind. The disturbances from one impact hardly subside before another impact throws the mind out of balance again. This condition of mind may be taken as natural by most people but is not at all conducive for the concentration that is needed in higher growth. So the yogi has to change this state of constant disturbances into a state of constant equilibrium by a deliberate exercise of will, meditation or any other means that may be available. He aims at attaining a condition in which he remains perfectly calm whatever may happen in the outer world or even in the inner world of his mind. His aim is not to acquire the power to quell a disturbance when it arises but more rare power to prevent any disturbance taking place at all. This kind of equanimity can be built on the foundations of perfect contentment, the capacity to remain satisfied whatever may happen. It is an extremely positive and dynamic condition, which has nothing in common with that negative mentality which is based on laziness and lack of initiative. It is based on perfect indifference to all those personal enjoyment, comforts, which sway mankind. The cultivation of this supreme contentment and consequent peace of mind is the result of prolonged self discipline and going through many experiences which involve pain and suffering. It cannot he acquired by mere assertion of will once for all. Habits stronger than nature and habits acquired through innumerable lives cannot be changed all at once.
