| Charity Sattvic Datavyamiti yaddanam diyateanupakarine Deshe kale cha patre cha taddanam satvikam smritam (BG-Ch-17; Sl-20) Donation of money or any gift given at the right time at the right place and to the deserving person is called sattvic donation. Sattvic gifts are of three types, material, mental and spiritual. On the material plane to give food and money to the poor is good. To provide him a job is better. To help him to become qualified for a job is still better. Continued material aid to a man makes him enslaved and dependent, so it is better to encourage him to remedy his ills by self help. On the mental plane to educate is good. On the spiritual o offer spiritual instructions to a good man is good. To aid an advance devotee is better. To bestow on a worthy disciple the ecstasy of samadhi is the best. Rajasic Yattu pratyupa karartham phalammuddishya va punah Diyate cha pariklishtam taddanam rajas am smritam (BG Ch-17; Sl-21) That gift is deemed rajasic which is offered with reluctance or in the thought of receiving a return or of gaining merit. Tamasic Adeshekale yaddanam apatre bhyascha diyate Asatkritam abagyatam tattamasam udahritam (BG Ch-17; Sl- 22) That gift which is bestowed at a wrong time and place to an unworthy person contemptuously or without goodwill. |
