lasting and the other young and fresh. This was too much even for the compassionate Lord to fulfill. He turned and walked away. Desires are insatiable, they cannot be totally fulfilled. They at some stage have to be controlled and nipped in the bud or totally transformed into the desire for God.

God's tests
As we advance spiritually in search of God, a time comes when God decides to put our devotion to test. He desires to know very clearly whether we are devoted to Him for His sake or we are merely seeking Him so that with His blessings we can seek gratification of some of our desires. Saint Kabir was put through one such test. As Kabir became famous for his miraculous healings the King of Varanasi invited him to his court to honor him. A few days before this incident a local prostitute came to him with a request to become his disciple and stay in his ashram. Saint Kabir closed his eyes, thought over the likely consequences of this request. He slowly opened his eyes and allowed her to stay. The decision was not liked by anybody in the ashram as the ashram was meant only for men. After a few days Kabir asked her to act as the manager of the ashram. This enraged other members who thought this to be an insult. Somebody so new to be made a manager. The disciples in hushed tones started speaking against their Guru's behavior. Later when the day arrived for him to visit the king he asked the prostitute to accompany him. As they were moving through the streets of Varanasi heading for the king's court there was lot of jeering, hooting, insulting words and even stone throwing upon him by the children and locals who did not like the idea of a prostitute staying in the ashram. In the meantime the king was informed that the saint is coming accompanied by a local prostitute. The king was furious and gave instructions to throw the saint away when he approaches the palace. As Kabir was walking up the stairs to the king's court two soldiers came and pushed him away. He fell down stumbling on the stair way. The prostitute seeing him hurt, bleeding gave him first aid and gently carried him back to the ashram. When he regained his strength a bit the prostitute asked him as to why he insisted on her being the manager of the ashram and accompany him to the king's court as he very well new the consequences. So much of insult from the local people, the king, the ashram inmates all this could have been very well avoided.
The saint quietly answered, God wanted me to show respect to you. I prefer to do what God wants me to do even if this means total humiliation at the hands of the world. Respect from this world is not important to me, my own pride and honor is not important to me, what is important I do what He wants me to do. I seek Him for His sake not for anything in this world. How many of us can truthfully say we are seeking God for His sake and not for anything of this world.

Good and bad both come from God
Spiritual teachings claim that we must learn to practice equanimity under all circumstances specially under the negative ones. All devotees of the Lord invariably had to put this into practice in a big way. Meera Bai a 16th century lady saint of India is famous for her soulstirring poems dedicated to Lord Krishna. Even today the culture sings her songs all over the country. Meera's sister-in –law was very jealous of her. She tried in many ways to defame her, scandalize her and even kill her. Once the sister sent a vial of poison to her with the instruction
