Grihastya
From 25 to 50 years of age is the life of a grihastya or married house-holder's life. On completion of the student life one entered the married life. Marriage was considered a sacred bond between two individuals to live life together, raise children, satisfy physical desires and perform spiritual duties. Selection of partners were not left to the discretion of young, emotionally immature adults whose only basis of selection is ever changing, whimsical sexual attractions. Partners were selected by parents with the help of other elder members of the family and relatives. During selection due consideration was given to age, social status, economic background, family health and a matching horoscope. The matching horoscope brought in effect a deeper compatibility between partners. This stage is very important and it had its duties to be performed. Human desires for name, fame, wealth, property, children, family and various pleasures are satisfied in this stage. These are to be done within the limits of balance, discipline, moral and ethical values. Every house-holder is required to perform the following five duties or ‘Pancha Yagnya' to the best of his ability.

Brahma or Rishi Yagnya
This yagnya pertains to the duties of human beings towards the great Rishis (Spiritual
Masters) who have given us the highest wisdom in the form of the sacred scriptures. Studying and obeying their teachings, offering our love and reverence to them, service to the saintly persons, monks, brahmins and teachers and donating a part of the income for the benefit of the saints and the monk's order constitute Rishi yagnya.

Deva Yagnya
This yagnya pertains to the duties of human beings to the Astral Deities or Devata as we call them in Indian tradition. These Deities have a governing and supplying role with regards to human life. Performing Havan (Vedic Fire Ritual) in which clarified butter (ghee), grains of rice and other food articles are offered in the sacred fire reaches these Deities as food. These Deities nourished by food offered to them in turn nourishes human beings by supplying them their needs. This is Deva yagnya. This is interdependency between human and astral beings.
