Mother As First Guru
By Swami Gurupremananda Saraswati

sinless souls). Their minds are not yet confused by ideas, choices and options. Whilst they only have conscious awareness up to a point appropriate to their age and development, for many months, the cause of all their actions is purely instinctive. However, beyond their present level of understanding (and also often our own) there is a field of knowledge which connects us all. By exercising our intuition, we are able to tap into that field of knowledge, to find information, answers and solutions direct from the source, as it were.
Just as adults do, babies also have their moments of deep meditative space, if given the time and space. They are just not as aware of it as we are. In such moments they (and we) are in harmony with nature, the cosmos, the "way things are", the universal mind, call it what you will. At these times there is a simple flow of pure knowledge between people, such that words do not need to be spoken. But it is the times when your baby forgets, becomes separated or gets distracted from this harmony, by hunger, pain, loneliness, etc, that they need us to help them back to that peace. But how can we do that if we ourselves are not in union with that harmony?
A mother's role, in addition to using her own intuition upon her baby needs, is also to remind her baby how to use his own intuition, through going in and out of that peaceful state. This is something very valuable for every child to know, and a lesson to last a lifetime. The first way she does that is with love and commitment. By teaching the baby that she will always answer his call, that she will be there when he needs her, that her responses will always be the best she can manage, he will learn to implicitly trust her. That will then enable him to rest in peace as it were, knowing that all is well between them. This relationship begins, as I have said many times before, way back in the womb, but it must be further strengthened each day beyond the birth. Gradually you and your baby will begin to communicate more and more intuitively - even long before he learns to talk. He will also know what you need from him too, and will go about providing that in his own way.
But those little "voices" of intuition can be hard to hear when there is a lot of competing noise around you (or within your own head!) and for this reason intuition is best developed in quiet, solitary moments. We all know it can be hard to find clarity when in a situation of anxiety - like a screaming, inconsolable baby! It is also hard to acknowledge the truth of one's own intuition when there are many different bits of well meaning advice being thrust upon you. But a daily time and place where meditation is practised,

will surely enhance your faculty of intuition (in addition to assisting your relaxation response) even to the point where you will be able to access it in times of stress. This is how I believe we should best use the time of breastfeeding.
Whilst a baby's own senses are developing, a mother greatly needs to rely on this sixth sense to understand what is happening outside of her own inexperience and to communicate with the child. The baby of course, is just reacting to his situation and does not know what he is "saying" to the mother. It is up to the mother to "hear" with her mind what the baby needs: to "see" with her mind what the baby needs: to "feel" with her mind what the baby needs. Like all things, this is just a skill one learns with experience and maturation, but its development can be greatly accelerated by meditative practise. The outcome of this is that the baby soon senses that you have understanding of his needs and comes to trust in your mothering skills more quickly - rather than a situation where his anxiety rises in response to your lack of experience and confusion.
Intuition is one of those intangible things that many people forget to draw upon, even if they know they can. More often than not we resort to the more gross methods of decision making - intellect or panic! When attempting to diagnose a baby's needs, so often a mother leaps from one possibility to another, frequently clouding the clues along the way, and losing her "centre" in the storm. This is where intuition can cut through all this confusion. It only takes a moment's focus and clarity to let yourself be lead by your higher mind, rather than your frantic, hassled one. Through the regular practise of Yoga Nidra and meditation you become more your own guide and can also get in touch with higher guides outside and beyond yourself.

~The Kundalini of
Childhood Development~

More than just the development of the physical senses, as all humans mature, we undergo transformation on the psychological and spiritual levels. Just as there is the descent of consciousness from the formless state leading to physical conception and childbirth, the newborn child begins an ascending evolutionary journey - towards both adulthood and greater enlighten-ment.
A child's development can also be understood as a function of kundalini shakti, the dormant spiritual power. Energy can be inward moving or outward
