changes similar to sympathetic stimulation. The adrenaline liberated by the adrenal gland increases the heart rate and blood pressure, dilates the air passages and releases large amount of glucose into the blood etc. The functions of these glands are under the control of hypothalamus.

Thus the hypothalamus is the trigger point that stimulates both the sympathetic and the endocrine system in response to stress. Man can function most efficiently only when there is a perfect balance in the activation of these two systems. This state of balance called homeostasis is the normal state in which the body and mind can function without wear and tear. During stress, the homeostasis is disturbed to protect the organism by draining out the energy. An efficient person is one who can bring about these stress adaptation changes by minimal increase in the energy expenditure and also return to a basal level of homeostasis within a short period after the excitement without any residual damage or wear and tear of the system.

How does stress increase blood glucose?

We have seen that one of the important factors that cause and aggravate diabetes is stress, that is caused by the erratic life style. We now know how stress can contribute to the onset and progression of diabetes
