Yoga Management of Acidity
By Dr. Vijay Singh Gusain
N.D.D.Y., Faculty Member, IFNHY

Have you experienced belching of a sour and sometimes bitter taste or a burning sensation in the throat, chest or stomach? Well, what you're suffering from is Acidity.

Acidity is caused by the excessive secretion of Hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Prolonged acidity can cause chronic indigestion, arthritis, gout, IBS, ulcers and even false angina pains.

There are a number of mind and body specific reasons why acidity may occur. These are:

Your mind body type - According to eastern philosophy, people who have a predominance of the fire element or the air and fire elements in their body are more susceptible to this malaise.

Hyperthyroidism - excessive secretion of the thyroid gland.

Anxiety, hostility, anger and stress.

Constipation, flatulence or Intestinal gases.

Taking food without hunger.

Artificial stimulants and fractional feeding - Artificial stimulants like smell or the thought of nearing the food time can create acidity.

Excessive intake of stimulants like tea, coffee etc.

Excessive intake of food that increases the fire element such as fried foods, spicy or pungent food, oranges, tomatoes, spinach etc.

Excessive intake of food that increases the air element such as kidney beans, horse gram, white rice, sprouts etc.

The Yogic Management

Yoga deals with the underlying causes, whether they are related to mind or body. This is contrast to modern medicine, which uses suppressants for symptomatic relief. This can impair the digestive system and lead to complications.

The Yogic Management of Acidity involves developing:

1. A routine
2. The right eating habit
3. Dietary and Lifestyle changes
