Description

“Yoga – What is it?” is a great little introduction to TRUE yoga and will help a lot of people make better decisions about the types of yoga they take up; the type of teachers they attach to; and the results they get from yoga in real life.

Designed for people seeking to adopt Yoga, the book deals only with the theory of Yoga (and not, practices). Yet, we believe it is a “must have” for every person seeking an initiation to yoga, for its clear, simple and incisive way of explaining the essential prerequisites to Yoga learning. It clears several cobwebs beforehand, which helps in the proper imbibing of Yogic learning.

A student having gone through this book can seldom go wrong as he moves up the yogic path. This book is powerful in that it is a product of direct transmission from the Guru to the disciple.

We only wish it was available more widely in the last 20 years to counter the nonsense which is proffered around the world today about "What is Yoga".

How the book is organized?

This concise 83pp book is organized into 13 chapters, helping a sincere aspirant to understand the right path for him/ her.

The contents are as under:

  • Chapter 1 WHAT YOGA IS?
  • Chapter 2 WHO CAN PRACTICE?
  • Chapter 3 CLEARING THE MISCONCEPTIONS
  • Chapter 4 THE HISTORY OF YOGA
  • Chapter 5 THE DIFFERENT PATHS OF YOGA
  • Chapter 6 WHAT IS TANTRA?
  • Chapter 7 SOME FACTS ABOUT ASANAS
  • Chapter 8 BREATHING AND PRANAYAMA
  • Chapter 9 MEDITATION: THE PATH TO SELF-DISCOVERY
  • Chapter 10 YOGIC HEALING

About the Author

Swami Gaurishankar Saraswati was born Carolyn Gaye Gustard in 1953 on the day of Shivaratri, in Sydney, Australia.

From a young age she was drawn to the spiritual life and started learning yoga at the age of 20. At 23 she travelled to India to experience ashram life and to learn more about yoga and Indian philosophy at the feet of a master.

She spent 9 years with her guru – Paramahansa Swami Satyananda Saraswati, practising, studying, researching and teaching yoga under his direct guidance. During that time she was also an editor of “Yoga” magazine and several other Bihar School of Yoga Publications.

Since returning to Australia in 1984, she has been teaching yoga on the mid and north coasts of NSW. She now lives in the Byron Bay area, still teaching the techniques of her guru and also working in the field of early childhood education.
