Abstract : We attempted to identify the effect of yogic relaxation technique (YRT) on psychological variables after Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG). Forty male patients with Coronary Artery Disease in age range of 35-65 years posted for CABG surgery were randomly allocated into a yoga group matched with a control group.

Spiel Berger's State-trait Inventory and Beck's Depression inventory Questionnaires were used to collect data. The yoga group practiced YRT while the control group continued to have normal care. A statistically significant decrease in the anxiety state and trait scores was observed in the yoga group while the control group showed an increase in the Beck's depression scores.

The results suggest that the anxiety and depression were reduced after yogic relaxation technique.

Summary & Conclusion : The present study demonstrated a significant reduction in the scores of anxiety state and anxiety trait. A non-significant trend of reduction in Beck's Depression scores with significant changes in blood pressure, pulse rate respiratory rate as result of relaxation were also observed. The control group showed increased in Beck's depression scores.

Early research on Relaxation technique was carried out on postoperative pain in patients undergoing cardiac surgery (Miller & Perry, 1990). This study showed the effectiveness of a slow, deep breathing relaxation technique in relieving the post-operative pain after coronary bypass graft surgery. Of the 29 subjects studied, 11 subjects said the technique was helpful in pain management and there was significant changes in blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate and report of pain on the visual descriptor scale.
